Keith O'Neal went to Alaska in August to hunt with an outfitter that he was thinking about booking for. It was a successful hunt for Arctic Grizzly and Barren Ground Caribou in the Brooks Range. The trip was so enjoyable that Keith returned during the week of Thanksgiving to hunt Sitka Blacktail and sea ducks on Kodiak. Keith will share the adventures of both trips with us at the meeting.
"From Adventure to Rescue in the Land of Yaks and Yetis". That is the way chapter member Bruce Tatarchuk describes this trip. The adventure takes place in the Himalayan Mountains of western Nepal. Following a 1 Y2 hour chopper flight from
Kathmandu our nimrod spent the next 16 days trekking the high country in search of blue sheep and tahr. Bruce reports that hunting on foot at over 15,000 feet was one or the more challenging yet exhilarating mountain adventures he's experienced. The hunting party, including 14 porters, cooks and guides was continuously on the move, never sleeping in the same place twice. After lengthy and exciting stalks Bruce eventually harvested a 15-year-old ram and then later a 16-year-old tahr. Bruce recorded a variety of photos and short video clips that he has agreed to share. You will appreciate the grandeur of the countryside as well as the primitive local life styles, rich in Buddhist and Tibetan culture.
You will also marvel at the strength and stamina of young porters as they carry loads through the rain, fog and snow that are well in excess of their body weights. From the exhilaration and celebration of the hunt to the stark realities of life, the complexion of this outing took a sudden change in direction when a member of the party became gravely ill.
The details of that experience serve as a sobering reminder to all our members, regardless of the hunt, about taking proper precautions when going afield.

Meet our 2012 Banquet auctioneer, Les Ohlhauser
Les Ohlhauser spent his first 16 years pursuing the abundant wildlife near the North Dakota ranch where he was raised. At 17, Les left the ranch to join the army and completed Airborne, Ranger, and Special Forces training. After spending several years as a soldier, Les was offered scholarships in football, rode and ROTC to North Dakota State University. Upon graduating from college, Les returned to serve in the Army as an officer. Les has completed over 360 qualified airborne jumps, many of which were overseas. He has been awarded several awards for his military accomplishments.
After leaving the military, Les moved to Colorado and was hired by the Nestlé Purina Pet Food Company as a commodity buyer, where he is still employed today.
Growing up on a ranch, Les has been involved in the auction business since he was 12. He picked up the auction chant from attending livestock auctions and began auctioning as a hobby. Two local auctioneers recognized his talent and put him to work selling livestock as one of the youngest auctioneers in the business. Winning the North Dakota State Auctioneer contest proved that young Les was the real thing, and he earned the respect of livestock buyers and sales barn owners. Les went on to win several more titles in other states. He is now a highly sought-after auctioneer all across the United States and Canada.

August 6th Press Release
Our chapter meetings are a great place to gather with others who share your interest in hunting, wildlife, and shooting sports. Our meetings are also a great place to learn about new hunting opportunities, outfitters, guides, and so forth.
Our members have hunted throughout the world for a wide range of species including, for example, bear, sheep, elk, moose, caribou, Cape buffalo, bongo, kudu, ibex, and of course, deer.
Meetings are generally held the third Tuesday of every other month (January, May, July, September, and November) with the annual fundraiser being held in February or March. Meetings begin at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour followed by dinner and programs at 6:30 p.m.
Members will be notified of any changes in the announcements that are sent prior to the meeting date.
Some of our recent programs included hunting in Mongolia, African safaris, Canadian whitetail deer hunts (you've got to see the pictures of these deer to believe them), and of course, an endless discussion of whitetail deer hunting in Alabama!
Please contact our chapter via e-mail for more information.
